APPOINTMENT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN HEALTH PRODUCTS REGULATORY AUTHORITY (SAHPRA) BOARD)

The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has appointed members of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) Board. SAHPRA replaces the Medicines Control Council (MCC). The scope of the new Authority has expanded to include not only medicines, but also medical devices including in vitro diagnostics, and aspects of radiation control.

At its 77th meeting on 21-22 April 2016, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) expressed their concern over the use of an unregistered medicine sold as Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) by the public. Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) has been claimed to be effective in the treatment of various medical conditions, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, autism, type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Medicines Control Council approves fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxyl fumarate and emtricitabine for pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV

At its 75th meeting on 27-28 November 2015, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) approved the use of the fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxyl fumarate and emtricitabine to include pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV (also referred to as PrEP).
